On September 21, 1952 The New York Times covered a momentous occasion – the completion of America’s longest highway. US 6 had become transcontinental just 15 years prior at 3,652 miles long and it wasn’t until that day paving was finished in 100-degree heat through Utah. To celebrate this incredible engineering feat two days were set aside to mark 33 ½ arrow straight asphalt miles from Hinckley West to Skull Rock Pass in Little Drum Mountains!
Established as a National 501(c)(3) charitable organization, as a Public Charity the U.S. Route 6 Tourist Association works to promote economic development and cultural preservation for communities located along “The Grand Army of The Republic Highway.” Spanning 3,652 miles in total, this grand old highway is an integral part of Americana with many sites rich in history waiting to be discovered!
